The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has announced that extensive evaluations have determined the historic "Singing Bridge" on Bridge Street in downtown Frankfort is unsafe and beyond repair. Initial designs for its replacement are underway, following its closure since August due to severe structural deterioration.

Governor Andy Beshear emphasized the bridge’s importance as a crucial link for Frankfort families and businesses, pledging the government’s commitment to maintaining this connection. KYTC engineers, in collaboration with various consultants, confirmed the necessity of constructing a new bridge to ensure safe access across the Kentucky River.

Transportation Secretary Jim Gray highlighted years of maintenance efforts aimed at safeguarding the Singing Bridge, noting that repairs are no longer feasible due to significant damage. The bridge’s closure has posed challenges for local traffic, with the nearest detours significantly increasing travel distances.

Frankfort Mayor Layne Wilkerson acknowledged the emotional significance of the bridge, affirming the city’s commitment to honoring its legacy through the new construction. As inspections continue, all findings point to a dire need for a replacement, aimed at providing a stable and lasting structure for future generations.
