Tappan Street Out of Kentucky Derby Due to Injury
April 26, 2025
Tappan Street, the winner of the GI Florida Derby on March 29, will not compete in this year’s Kentucky Derby after sustaining a condylar fracture in his right front leg. Trainer Brad Cox confirmed the injury, noting that while it requires surgery, it is not expected to be career-ending. The colt was worked on Saturday morning, clocking five furlongs in 59.60 seconds, but jockey Luis Saez sensed something was amiss, prompting further examination.
With Tappan Street’s withdrawal, last year’s Derby-winning trainer Kenny McPeek gains a spot in the race with his horse, Render Judgment. This horse, who finished fifth in the GI Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland and has only one win from a Churchill maiden race last October, now steps into the Derby lineup.
Tappan Street made three lifetime starts, impressively breaking his maiden debut on December 28 at Gulfstream, finishing third in the GII Holy Bull Stakes, and winning the Florida Derby. The withdrawal marks a significant shift in the Derby landscape as the race approaches on May 3.
