Second weekend sees ‘A Minecraft Movie’ soaring to $80.6 million at the box office

After just two weeks in theaters, “A Minecraft Movie” has become the highest grossing Hollywood release of 2025, surpassing $550 million in global ticket sales. Despite mixed reviews from critics and audience scores that were merely good, the film directed by Jared Hess and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa has resonated with moviegoers, particularly those who enjoy big-budget video game adaptations.

The success of “A Minecraft Movie” has helped reinvigorate theaters after a slow start to the year, with overall ticket sales doubling from the same weekend in the previous year. Other films released during the weekend, such as “The King of Kings,” “The Amateur,” “Drop,” and “Warfare,” did not come close to challenging the box office dominance of “Minecraft.”

“The King of Kings,” an animated film based on Jesus’ life, came in second at the box office with a strong CinemaScore of “A+,” positioning it well for the upcoming Easter holiday. “The Amateur,” starring Rami Malek, debuted with $15 million domestically, while “Warfare,” directed by Alex Garland, opened with $8.3 million and was praised for its realistic portrayal of combat. “Drop,” a thriller from Blumhouse Productions, premiered with $7.5 million in ticket sales.

Overall, the success of “A Minecraft Movie” has had a significant impact on the box office landscape in 2025, helping to boost ticket sales and bring audiences back to theaters.
